University of Tennessee
The University of Tennessee was chartered on September 10, 1794, and is the flagship institution of the statewide land-grant University of Tennessee public university system. The system is headquartered in Knoxville and includes campuses in Memphis, Martin, and Chattanooga. The University of Tennessee's total enrollment in 2005 was 28,552 students, and the University is ranked among the top 40 public universities of America, and has many specialty rankings. The University of Tennessee has over 450 registered student organizations, and many athletic departments. The major hub of research at the University of Tennessee is Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), which is one of the largest government laboratories in the United States.
